About Silas

I am maintaining this blog as a way to continue the dialogue with everyone who is interested in tunnel ventilation and fire life safety around the world.

I am currently the Technical Director of Tunnel Ventilation at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff where I am involved in various projects involving advanced technologies that can improve tunnel ventilation and fire life safety.  I have spent over 30 years in ventilation analysis and design, especially in the application of Subway Environment Simulation (SES), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Egress modeling and Environment Control System (ECS) design for rail and road tunnels worldwide. I enjoy working with my colleagues to develop innovative and cost-effective tunnel systems.

I appreciate the opportunity to serve in the Technical Committee of NFPA 130 (Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems), and also serve as an international member of the technical advisory committee of International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security.

On weekends, my wife and I love hiking and relaxing in the beautiful nature of Long Island.  I am “savvy” enough to communicate with my adult kids through social media.  I have gradually turned my full time job into a hobby and love finding new ways to learn and share knowledge.
